Eterium is designed to not require the keyboard when using an Xbox 360 controller because we wrote custom code to support it. I highly recommend using an Xbox 360 controller to play Eterium (if you don't want to play with a joystick). To answer your question about controllers. We are discussing the possibility of offering an alternative mouse control that is closer to an FPS. Being the dev, I personally like the mouse controls but they have a very steep learning curve.
